JAPANESE MORTAR
Motoshige Japanese mortar

MOTOSHIGE · MORTARS & GRATERS
Form follows the way
you use it.
A tool should do its job well. Our mortar was shaped to make everyday grinding easier.
Sharp ridges cut by hand and a deep bowl that draws ingredients to its center:
every detail is there for a reason.

01 / RIDGES CUT BY HAND
The secret to easy grinding:
sharp, even ridges.
The ridges inside a mortar are what make it work. Our craftspeople cut them one by one by hand, creating an edge that a molded ridge cannot achieve.
Too little pressure leaves the edge blunt. Too much creates a step that catches the pestle. By adjusting their touch to the condition of the clay, our craftspeople make the ridges sharp and even.
They grip ingredients so you can grind with less time and effort. The hardness and natural texture of Iwami ware also contribute to the grinding feel.

02 / A SHAPE MADE FOR USE
A deep bowl that gathers.
A broad base that stays steady.
The steep sides keep ingredients from escaping and guide them toward the center. A broad base and silicone ring underneath help keep the bowl steady as you grind, even without holding it in place.
The ring also helps protect your table without a cloth underneath. Grind, mix and serve in the same bowl. This rounded form grew from the way we wanted the tool to work.
